Coming from Thenon along the National Road 89 towards Brive you arrive at Azerat.

The diverted Douzillet stream, from the Douyme flowing into the Cern, supplies a water reservoir which used to work a water mill. Lower down from the National Road you can first glimpse, then follow, the jetty bordering the reservoir, which will bring a cooling note to your journey.

See beyond the “side of the road” feeling of this place and you will find a charming village whose picturesque lanes converge at the churchyard. Visit the 13th century chapel, Our Lady of Good Hope (a historic monument) as well as the church Our Lady of the Assumption.

Thanks to its location, the parish of Azerat is an ideal base for a holiday spent visiting the great sites of the Dordogne, while at the same time enjoying serenity and a remarkable natural environment. The region is associated not only with the limestone plains of the Causses, but also with the varied farming landscape which can be recognised by several elements: its peaceful nature, which sometimes seems untouched; the architectural quality of its buildings; and its proximity to the rivers of the Dordogne and the Vézère.

Azerat is considered a Natural Zone of Ecologic, Fauna and Flora Interest, by virtue of its wildlife reserve. The region is also home to underground phenomena such as the Planssonnie caves (private, found in the hamlet) and the Douyme caves (spring and former mill).

The farming activity, of utmost importance in the community, takes place amongst beautiful landscapes. It represents a very important development potential in the “Agriculture / Tourism” field. It is worth noting that the parish is part of the territory authorised to use the “Appellation d’Origine Controlée,” (guaranteeing the origin of products) for the Walnuts of the Périgord.

The motorway viaduct, a giant work of art spanning the valley of le Douime, is worth the detour. A new factory zone will soon be built between Thenon and Azerat.
